Be your own boss is one of the best ways to change your life. That’s why many people want to start their business and that’s a great thing, but if this is your case, you will never change your life until you change something you do daily.
So how do you do that? Let’s find out!
Hello, I’m your host Kaycinho, I’m a digital alchemist, and today I want to talk about a quote that I stumbled upon and that is key for anyone willing to change their life.
But before we move on, if it’s your first time here, and you want to brand, market and grow your business it in the Digital Age make sure you subscribe to my channel by clicking here and smash the notification bell, so that you never miss your share of digital alchemy.
With that out of the way, let’s look at today’s quote:
You will never change your life until you change something you do daily
Be your own boss: something needs to change!
When I read this quote, I really felt inspired, because I get to meet many people, and I love that. And when I tell them what I do in life many people tell me they want to be their own boss too.
And that gets me thrilled! I always try to throw little nuggets of experience when people want my help.
So it all sounds great in theory. But when I happen to meet to same people again a few months later, most of the time, they haven’t moved an inch.
They would come up with excuses like:
– “I have kids“
– “I have too much on my plate“
– “My aunt Louise was ill and I helped her out“
I’m not blaming them: I understand where they’re coming from. I used to be exactly like that. I was particularly creative at coming up with excuses.
But, if you want to change your life but continue to do exactly what you’ve been doing for years… Guess what? Nothing’s gonna happen!
The key to understand
The key is to understand that everybody got stuff on their plate, and if you wait for the perfect moment in life to get started, you’re going to wait a lot, because the moment may never come.
Stop making excuses and instead, find ways to look at what you have instead of looking at what you don’t have.
For example, if you’re a student, you may want to cut down on partying and instead use evening and early mornings to work on your business.
If you are struggling and have a couple of low paying jobs, it may be time to dress up that resume, and find one job that may not pay much more but that would use less hours so that you can devote more time to creating a business that will free you from the 9-to5 slavery in the long run.
So, going back to our quote, how do you start doing something different daily, the smart way? Let me share with you 3 key principles:
Be your own boss principle 1: commitment
It may sound simplistic, but the truth is that the first principle you should adhere to is to commit to work on your project every – single – day. Even if that means only 15 minutes.
If you’re at the beginning of your project, don’t look at the top of the mountain because you may get discouraged. Instead, focus on your next step. Then the next one. And so on.
Do you already have a concept? Do you already have a business name? What about your branding? Do you have a website online yet?
You get the idea.
And if you’re stuck, don’t forget that I have a free video course out there called Be Your Own Boss – Series I that you can follow by clicking here.
So how can you work on your business each and every day?
Commit to spend minimum 15 minutes each and every day on your project: whether it is research on how to find a good business name, how to brand your business, and so on.
Be your own boss principle 2: be prepared to make sacrifices
To be your own boss means time sacrifice
And what I mean by that is: if you want to be your own boss, be ready to sacrifice some time, some money as well as a good portion of your social life.
I never knew how much sacrifice becoming my own boss would mean until I got started!
And wow, that’s completely different from being an employee. Even though I know some jobs can be hard, but being your own boss adds additional layers employees don’t have to worry about.
But don’t get discouraged, because the truth is that you decide to be your own boss, if you love what you do, you will have a tremendous new source of energy!
Because you are not working just to finish your working day and get paid, you are working because you are building something for you!
I can’t tell you how many times I must force myself to stop working on my projects because it’s already 3 AM and my head is buzzing with ideas.
And when you’re getting started, you’re going to have to put in a lot of hours, because most of the time you’ll be on your own.
Now if you have the funds to start hiring right away: lucky you! That’s great. But for most people reading those lines, more than likely, they will start with only one employee: themselves!
To be your own boss also means financial sacrifice at the beginning
You can start a business with 0$ in the Digital Age. It happens! But unless you are an exception, it’s going to take you a lot more time than if you invest some of your money.
It could be paying for Google or Facebook Ads, investing in some software and so on…
Now if you live in a country where it’s hard to make decent money, I totally understand that you are trying to bootstrap as much as you can and are looking mainly for free solutions. That, I understand.
But what I don’t understand though, is people willing to spend $500 on an audio headset or $300 on a pair of sneakers, but unwilling to spend $50 on web hosting for their own business? Come on!?
Sometimes you will invest some money and lose it. But with experience, you will get return on investment, and then can re-inject some of the money in your business.
Understanding this concept will help you down the road.
To be your own boss means managing your social life
I live to hang out with friends, but at one point, you need to cut down the distractions.
I’m not saying you should start living as a monk (and if there is a monk reading this: no offense dude!). But maybe choose one evening in the week to socialize, but be laser focused on your project the remaining 6 days!
There is only 24 hours in a day and only 7 days a week, so if you want to progress, you really need to start focusing on what really matters to you!
Be your own boss principle 3: pick up the entrepreneur mindset, like Stevethegamer55
I will never say it enough, but being an entrepreneur is all about the mindset first.
Give 1 million dollars to start a business to someone lacking an entrepreneur mindset and they will fail miserably.
Give 100 dollars to someone with the entrepreneur mindset and you will see what success is all about.
Let me give you an example. We often think of business minded people in areas such as finance, tech, and so on.
But what if I told that someone playing games all day long could be such an entrepreneur?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably heard of Twitch and Youtube. And those platforms are packed with a gazillion of competing gaming channels.
Yet, one caught my attention. Stevethegamer55.
A gamer?
As I mentioned previously, working on my project takes a lot of my time, so I can’t play as much as I used to (yes I looooove video games, especially Grand Theft Auto and Fifa Soccer).
Actually months can pass by without me playing a single game…
So when my day is done, I enjoy watching some Youtube videos of people playing games because it’s only going to take 10 to 30 minutes of my times, it makes me laugh, it makes me relax and after a hard day of work sometimes I don’t have the energy to play myself.
I just want to relax.
And that’s when I stumbled on Stevethegamer55’s channel.
You may think “Oh well, that’s just a gamer, what does it have to do with the entrepreneur mindset?“.
Well, if you look closely, at the time of writing this post, Steve’s got almost 3000 videos and 2 million subscribers. The man is a machine. He releases a few videos per day!
And I remember one video when Steve showed images of the car he just bought. And the funny thing is that it was his dream car that he use to ride in the GTA V game.
See, Steve treated his passion as a business. 3000 videos!! Need I say more?
Crushing the competition
In an oversaturated market, Steve stands out from the crowd by releasing entertaining series that allow one to discover great games, but with a different angle. Steve is always looking at how he can improve the scenarios, add more drama.
He spends a lot of time modding the game and adding new characters, cars, objects, and so on.
I love this show! Especially the LSPDFR episodes where he acts as a cop.
Let’s stop talking about games here because, just like soccer, I could talk about it for days!
The point is: be like Steve! Crush the competition by seizing opportunities and giving the best you can out of all you’ve got!
Be your own boss: your turn
So, I hope that this episode gave you the motivation to start changing something you do daily and be on the way to YOUR success!
